#Need help with playback on Audacity on Linux

I have spent the past three days trying to record on audacity for the sake of practicing voice acting. After finally figuring out the mic issue I sometimes had, I've consistently have been unable to listen to the playback, getting an error of "wait timed out" and "error opening sound device" back to back. It would also freeze the program for about a minute whenever I would switch audio options after the errors popped up. I tried looking it up and the manual, but it left me only more confused and frustrated.

Questions:

  1. What does "wait timed out" mean? How can I avoid it?

  2. The manual suggested downloading Pulse Audio but that is only for recording audio playing on the computer; should I still download it even if I'm never going to record computer audio? For that matter, should I have my mic and/or speaker settings set to "pulse" at all?

  3. The audacity version I downloaded was the one I got from typing "sudo apt install audacity"; should I update? If so, how?

  4. What should I do if Linux suddenly stops using my mike? I've manually went to my settings and disabled and re-enabled Linux's mike permissions everytime this happened. Is there an easier way?

Computer Model: HP Chromebook 11 G5
Operating System: Chrome OS Version 103.0.5060.132 (Official Build) (64-bit)
Audacity version 2.4.2 (I uninstalled it atm but that's the version I had)
Microphone: Samson Q2U w/ USB connection

Thank you so much in advance.
