Don't let it ruin your life 🙂 You can always get an older version of Audacity from FossHub.com. The "smart clip" feature (that copies the entire clip) first appeared in Audacity 3.1. Audacity 3.0 was a bit buggy (it was a major version jump from Audacity 2.x, so some breakages were expected). Audacity 2.4.2 was the last official release before Audacity 3.0.

This seems to be a bug, it doesn't occur in 3.1.3
