Well, their is a masive platform under where everyone's plots are. So what they could do instead check for items being on top of the platform and then just reset the position of the items it finds to the center of your of their owner's plot, or put it on the their owner's trade depot if they have one.
Unless your items are in the actual void, then they are gone.

I know there's a massive platform there because the game sometimes spawns me on it when loading in.
There's some pretty big fish down there...
