Hi! I wanted to share an idea for Essential that I think could be very interesting for small groups of friends playing Minecraft together (typically 5 to 10 people).

The idea is to add a feature that would allow having a shared, synchronized world across all players, so that no one needs to keep their PC running 24/7 or rely on a dedicated server. This would be aimed at casual friend groups who want to avoid external hosting, port forwarding, or paying for a server.

Here’s how it could work:

All players would have a synchronized copy of the world on their PC, using either cloud storage or a peer-to-peer system managed internally by Essential.

When a player wants to play, the mod would check if anyone is already hosting. If not, that player would be notified they will become the new host.

The world would load on their PC and be opened to the rest of the friends.

When that player disconnects, Essential would automatically sync any changes back so the next player gets the most up-to-date version.

If a player tries to open the world without having the latest version, the mod would notify them to sync first.

There could also be safety warnings if someone tries to close the game without properly syncing their changes.

This system would allow the world to always be available without depending on a single person, and without the need for external tools like Hamachi, VPNs, or port forwarding. Each player could open the world naturally, knowing they’re always on the latest synced version.

I believe this idea fits very well with Essential’s philosophy of making multiplayer easier for users who don’t want to deal with networking, servers, or technical configurations. It would essentially act as a "community cloud" that ensures consistent progress without technical headaches.

Thanks for reading and for all the great work on Essential — it’s an amazing mod and it really helps the community a lot!

A cloud is external. Running servers for hosting can cost a load of money, hence why server hosts costs money. You can't do that stuff for free.
If you want something straight forward, buy a realm. If you want something with plugins, try a host like Modrinth. Heck, even if you have an old PC you could turn that into a Minecraft server.
