It has to do with paper score keeping back in the day. You fill in one base to represent single, 2 to represent double and etc. so you only fill in the base on the score sheet when you get a hit. Otherwise you draw a line. That’s where the total bases stat originally comes from I believe

Has to do with these babies and how they used to keep score

A lot of high schools still use this to keep score, when I was a sophomore in highschool riding bench for the varsity games I had to do a lot of these lol
