Here we go first PGA play of season, potentially more later.

Last year at Sony the Average was 7.98 fairways per round, expected almost an inch of rain gonna make these fairways very sticky and cause little roll outs. I expect the average to jump closer to 8.5 for Round 1. Rough has also been reported as being munch longer at 4’’ this year which will make hitting fairways more of a premium, and lift clean and place very likely to go into effect.

Aaron Rai 2nd on tour in driving accuracy. Hasn’t played this course before. But Rai gaining 2.5 to almost 3 fairways on the field average in his last 14 PGA Tour events.

76/122 golfers had 8+ yesterday (62% of the field) The average was just above 8.0 yesterday. Even less winds today so expecting same if not slightly higher average for today’s round.

Golfers are realizing more and more about how much of a penalty this rough is compared to previous years here. Letting it grow since January and not cutting it all week. Highest WM has ever let it be.

Hovland has 9 and 6 this week which is concerning at first but over last 10 tournaments he has gained on the field in accuracy in 8 of those tournaments. 58th on tour in Driving Accuracy last year which is above average and he’s priced below this course average

I see a lot of trickier pin locations that will limit a lot of the birdies tomorrow. Noticeable 17 pin plays nearly half a stroke harder at its current pin location. Hole 3 is protected by a shelf that will create difficult approaches and force up and down birdies. These 3 holes have been the 2nd and 3rd easiest holes all week.

Birdie average was 3.8 today and I expect that to go down slightly. Bogey average was right around 2.5 today and expect similar for that for tmrws round

We also got a clutter of people within 1-2 shots of lead which I think we will see a lot of guys taking the safe approach to start their rounds not getting too aggressive until the back 9

Have seen similar rounds play 4.9-5.2 strokes with as low as 19% birdie rates. Expecting anywhere from 25-30% BoB rate at best here so would imply >70% hit rate on golfers and just gotta hope we pick the right ones 🙏

GIR average was 10.98 in round 1 and has historically been about 10.5 to 11.0 average. No rain came so I expect the greens average will go down a bit maybe to 10.6-10.75 and could be more extreme in PM. should see a more consistent wind and some stronger gusts in the low to mid 20s. Also Florida golf the course really firms up and we saw a 1 shot difference in am vs pm yesterday due to the wind and crispier greens.

Noren ranks 83rd on tour this year in GIR% about middle of the tour. This tournament has all the best players in it so here really towards the bottom.

Noren struggles from 200+ here is the big angle I like. 12th percentile in last 12 months at 5th percentile since start of season. He loses distance on the field in just about every event he plays so more longer shots for him.

Noren had AM tee time round 1 and had 11 GIR. Hasn’t played here since 2023 so with grain of salt but less in 4/5 rounds here.

Fairway average was 8.15, expect similar average

Relative to the field, Spaun has the following; 0% +4% and -2% in last 3 starts

9 in round 1. 7,8,9,8 here last year. Less in 9 of 11 with both misses being at 10 in 2022.

Where I see the biggest change is the pins. They essentially used Sunday pins on a moving day and tucked in so many spots where it’s just impossible to throw it in close without a wedge from the fairway. Going to see a lot of middle greens and look for 2 putts.

Bhatia has an un maintainable 8 strokes gained putting this week, due for some regression. Has been horrid off the tee which with these pins is no good.

Bridgeman cleared with an 18 and 20 foot birdie yesterday. Tied with a 24 footer on Thursday. Approach has been losing strokes all week which will be tough to make 5 birdies today doing
