while there is lore in S3, here’s a brief summary
Basically thousands of years ago, the entire earth was flooded due to humanity messing up (climate change, nuclear war, etc.)
this led to the destruction of most land-based life forms including all mammals, and thanks to the powers of synthetic-crystal-induced evolution, squids, octopuses, and all sorts of other marine creatures would evolve to become land-dwelling species of their own.
