the squids were already in the cave due to accumulated seawater (and also served as humanitys only food source.. probably until they built the eco-forest treehills to let them start growing plants again)
scientists took the squid and squooged out the fluids, did some chemistry, and voila liquid crystals.
hey cool these things change color in response to thought waves, let's make 20 tons of the stuff and pave the roof to make a fake dream sky
