I'm using Heavy Splatling and at times it feels like i don't have a sub weapon even (also my gear has horrid stats but idc drip > winning)

I like to use it when i have a safe chance to push forward for a few seconds and then lob it into enemy held territory. I will also toss it out sometimes on the left or right side of a choke point to funnel enemies towards the other side making it easier to hit them.

I think on slow weapons like splating and dynamo you can place it on the wall and not have to waste time

The way to use sprinkler is to throw it in spots which you want to kind of "probe" or start placing ink that you don't want to get approached from in a rather casual way
It's basically there for you to throw if you want to push up or don't want to approach a certain location in order to keep your position
or the aforementioned chokeholds for you to try and prevent people from getting through, etc. flanks or such

Dynamo is a nice weapon with sprinklers. Always try to find a high place to throw the sprinkler, mainly a place where many weapons can’t get it alone. If ur playing splatoon 1 or 2, pirahna pit benigits from these. Also regularly replace them as the decay makes the weapon useless after a while
