#automagic e-series disk firmware upgrade

Since 12.0(.0.0) release, StorageGrid (compute) reboots, maintenance mode boots and hotfixes are supposed to be upgrading disk firmware "automagically" on their attached E-series hardware, but I can see this isn't happening (lots of other checks for firmware happen). We're running 12.0.0.4 so we've been through at least 2 hotfixes and some reboots since 12.0, but I have a lot of controllers with back-revision fw that was released quite a while back (they newest relevant fw version for our disks is from 14 Jul 2025).
Has anyone seen this actually work?

I've never seen it happen, but I have two potential issues.

  1. Initially only a certain set of drives had firmwares included in 12.0, I think it was something like 20 that they were able to test. The thinking was to expand the list in future releases. Don't know what the status is there today. So I guess it's possible that the drives that are not up-to-date are not in the current list. Just guesses here though.

  2. The feature required a certain SANtricity level to work (otherwise there would be a validation issues). I think it was 11.80.1R4 minimum. So just being on StorageGRID 12.0 isn't enough.

we run newer e-os than 11.80.1R4 and especially the SSD (cache) disk firmware which requires maintenance mode would have been nice to see working. I don't see to many different disk models there. It would save quite a bit of time as shutting down to maintenance mode in order to do a 1 minute job to update firmware on 2 disks ends up taking about 65 minutes per node.
