#FAS50 fm_run0: no local disks found & OFW channel is not up.

I want to preface that I didn't have the time to test boot option 9a/9c today but will try next chance.

Customer just got a new FAS50 system with 8 internal disks and boot option 4 lands it into loader prompt.
These are the last few lines of the boot process before landing in the loader prompt:

bootarg.bootmenu.selection is |4a|
BOOTMGR: The system has 0 disks assigned whereas it needs 3 to boot, will try to assign the required number.

I am unable to create a case yet due to some mixup with how the nodes are registered in mysupport I guess. Hopefully fixed soon but might be days.
I also want to note in case it matters; the nodes came with ONTAP 9.17.1 but were downgraded to 9.16.1P10 via USB to match the cluster they will join.

So I just wanted to check with you folks if there are obvious things I should put on the list of things to check and try.

eh. sounds like it used 3 disks for the root/boot and you need to manually configure it
no idea why it's still default to use 3 disks

Agreed. I’ve seen this before. But a long while ago and it was patched. Boot option 9 is the best place to start.

FAS50 with only 8x internal SSDs? AFAIK an all-SSD config is not possible to quote point-of-sale, you need at least 12x NL-SAS disks for the FAS50 model. Also min. 100TB RAW (NL-SAS).

But more importantly these 22x internal slots on the FAS50 are only supported with 9.17.1 and later. Check HWU.

You can see the minimum also here: https://kb.netapp.com/on-prem/ontap/OHW/OHW-KBs/What_are_the_minimum_storage_requirements_for_AFF_and_FAS_system_configurations

Did you order it with additional shelves? Then you need to connect them first.

glass valley
#

yes there is a ds460c also
but wanted to stand up the nodes beforehand

worthy crane
#

the internals are for boot only?

glass valley
#

yep

#

well this was easy to miss...

#

odd since it says 9.16.1 is a supported version

winged idol
#

Click on "Supported Shelves/Drives" at the top. You will see that only with 9.17.1+ it will mention internal drives.

glass valley
#

you're right

I was asking more a design config from OP.

#

HWU shows v1 for ADP only IIRC.

winged idol
#

Yeah I'm not 100% sure what's currently supported or not. The technical FAQ for example says:
"FAS50, FAS70 and FAS90 controllers leverage root-data (RD) partitioning for HDDs and rootdata-data (RD2) partitioning for SSDs." 🤷

glass valley
#

also no ssd's for use with root with rd1

The internal drives are NVME and to use those I am pretty sure you need 9.17!

#

Load 9.17 and I think it will work

cursive thicket
#

Verified on HWU
If you look at Disks for FAS50 with 9.16.1, There is NO SUPPORT for using NVMe drives
If you look at Disks for FAS50 with 9.17.1, There IS support for NVMe drives

#

It >might< be possible to get ADPv2 if you have the "internal" NVMe. However, I am not seeing any documentation that supports that idea. It appears you must have "external" disks for root aggrs

glass valley
#

Thanks; I really appreciate the input

I will schedule the upgrade to 9.17 with the customer and hopefully the disks will become visible at least.

Regarding the root; fusion allows for whole disks at least. That should work on real hardware?
That should be fine since these internal disks were really just meant for the root anyway as I understand it

winged idol
#

Yes, whole disks should work too. Quite a luxury to have 8x1.92TB SSDs for root-aggrs only (I guess there are not bigger SSDs).

glass valley
#

its a bit of a waste

cursive thicket
#

On the fas platforms, only SSDs can be used for flash cache (not nvme). From what I see they (nvme drives) can only be used for data aggregates. Not root

glass valley
#

there are disks in slot 0 and 23 reserved for flashcache

reading the technical faq it says internal nvme can be used for aggregates and flashpool; but don't state root speficially

however fusion allows for it; but i dont know if that translate to reality

cursive thicket
#

I was told by an engineer that he thinks that nvme can’t be used for flashpool/storagepool

#

I guess someone could try 😁

glass valley
#

that will be me next week I suppose

in the meantime trying to get support on the line

cursive thicket
#

It is very possible that originally (when the FAQ was first released and what I recall) the FAS50 did not support any internal NVMe drives for anything other than the two slots for FlashCache (0 & 23). The latest FAQ is updated Jan 2026

To confirm, the internal DATA NVMe SSDs you can put in bays 1-22 are available for whole-disk SSD aggregates or for 4-partition Storage Pools of hybrid aggregates.

#

Root partitions are NOT supported on those internal NVMe drives.

glass valley
#

What about whole disk root aggregates?

#

Ah

glass valley
#

reason i about whole disks is because fusion lets me do that; but does not let me use adp
I assume its not supported either but would appreciate confirmation if possible

glass valley
#

This tab always came up empty when I was trying to open it yesterday but seems to be working now

seems to allow for ssd-nvme for root aggr with raid4 and dp

ignoring cost - So if you added in 8 SSDs in ternally. and a shelf of of like 60x10TB NLSAS. it's be supported?

cursive thicket
#

You would be adding in 8 NVMe internal drives ? and an external shelf of SATA?
I do not know if ONTAP will allow boot from the NVMe internals. I doubt it. However...it may work. Not supported 😉
So many questions to fool around with. I would love to have a FAS50 with some internal drives and an external shelf to play with to see what it actually does

I don't think it's unsupported. They probably just forgot to add this (admittedly weird) config to HWU yet
