#Is My DS-Series Shelf Compatible With LSI 9200-8e + controller?

Hi everyone, I’m planning to connect this storage shelf to my server using an LSI 9200-8e HBA (IT mode) with a QSFP SFF-8436 to Mini-SAS SFF-8088 cable as recommended. Before I move forward, I want to confirm whether this setup is fully compatible with TrueNAS Core/Scale in JBOD mode and whether I’m using the correct expansion ports on the back of the shelf for the HBA connection. I’d also like to know if there are any known issues or limitations with this model when using ZFS or HBA passthrough. Could someone please confirm if everything looks correct or if I should consider anything else before proceeding?

as has been explained already, this is not a shelf (JBOD) but a complete controller with RAID and everthing. If you want to use it as a shelf you need to replace the controller modules with "dumb" IOM12 modules. After that you can connect it to an LSI 9200 and use it in JBOD (IT) mode

Pull out the two controllers and install at least one IOM12 module. I would suggest using the LSI 9300-16e because you will get double the speed. You ofcause need anohter cable with MiniSAS-HD in both ends. As far as I remember the disks in the e-series are formatted with 512bps so you should be able to see them without reformatting. You can do multipathing with two IOM12 modules installed, but not sure if TrueNAS supports that... but it works on a standard ubuntu setup. I would suggest having a loot at the level1techs forum which has lots of information about all this... good luck

Yeah, but still why the 9200 HBA that is only 6G speed when you can use the 9300 HBA and get double the speed.. I don't think the 9300 HBA is that much more money...

With only one HBA and one IOM12 you will only need one cable..

Probably can’t solve your issue but I know Dell parts are special as the old OEM deal with them was just that, special…
