probably not as critical as it sounds. We had no issues yet with our install base (but we'll still be upgrading everyone ASAP). Also since it's an environmental shutdown, the partner should take over normally if/when it happens
I got two AFF20 running with the NetApp Release 9.16.1P5: Sat Jun 21 02:06:33 UTC 2025
and the BMC is Version 19.1P1
Does anyone know if the ONTAP 9.18.1RC1 includes the BMC 19.3 FW Update?
you can check here which BMC/SP version comes bundled with which ONTAP version
so, no, 9.18.1RC1 still comes with 19.2P1
Just upload the BMC package via the GUI!
Just here and the ontap I have installed currently doesnt matter?
Correct!
Most of the time. In this case doesn’t matter. There are a few edge cases that require a minimum P version on different versions (9.13/9.14/etc). think of the charging bug for the fas8300/a400. in those cases you could install it but it was not fully effective until the ONTAP update
Those edge cases are usually well defined and they pop notes in the readme as you download
Alright thanks a lot.
did the update to 19.3 on the BMC without any problems.
It’s a tracked QSR internally, so that’s more than a regular BMC upgrade urgency
be careful: If the BMC update is perform from the LOADER (while ONTAP is not running), you must reconfigure the IP configuration of the BMC manually.
did the update on a system witch was in takeover mode. BMC didn´t came up again and i have to configure the BMC again on the LOADER.
just boot into ontap and wait a few minutes, ONTAP will reconfigure the BMC's network after a while (can take up to 15 minutes)
you can´t boot to ontap when the system is in takeover and the BMC isn´t reachable anymore after the update to 19.3 😉
serial?
I mean to reconfigure the BMC you need to connect via serial anyway. Then, instead of looking up the old IP and going through "sp setup", you can just "autoboot" and wait 10 minutes 🙂
I use the BMC image install from the ontap prompt or WebUI. No need to failover, or install from the BMC prompt and reconfigure.
I have to say that I have never done a BMC upgrade from the LOADER prompt
Got the case once, BMC backup image was too old for allowing ONTAP 9.16 and refused to boot.
I asked if there is a way to update BMC backup image in order to prevent this kind of scenario again but did not find any clue ^^
The BMC is the "second brain" of ONTAP. That is why certain release numbers are paired with the ONTAP distribution. Yes, you can install a higher revision than what ONTAP comes packaged with, and that is generally OK. To be very down-rev, however, is a potential problem.
Becuase it has firmware refinements that control the multiverse of the PCM, it is paramount to the success of the operating system.
@south jewel we do have an option to upgrade the backup firmware of the BMC but we can do it only from the BMC console
Don’t think you can update the BMC from the LOADER. Howeveri believe from the LOADER you can configure it and then access it (control-g) and then do an update
Here are the various methods to update the BMC one of which is through the BMC directly: https://kb.netapp.com/on-prem/ontap/OHW/OHW-KBs/steps_to_update_ONTAP_Service_Processor_SP_or_Baseboard_Management_Controller_BMC
The BMC console which I meant here is that login directly shh to using BMC ip and upgrade the backup firmware from there.
Not the loader prompt
yeah that's why TMACs comment was not directed at you 😉
