Hi All,,

Is there or has there ever been the capability to backup a single Virtual Machine with a NetApp snapshot ?

We have a customer where we have SC for VMware 5.0.0 setup and in a previous role they thought you were able to create a single "VM" NetApp snapshot from the NetApp context menu when you right click on a VM.

Was this a feature and taken out of the newer releases or is the customer mistaken ?

I know you can manually kick off a "Run Now" on a resource group you have configured to take a snaphosts of all VMs in the resource group

Sure you can. But the snapshot have to be created by SVI in order for it to restore it... What "actually" happens when you do a restore; is that the whole datastore is cloned and mapped, then the VM files are copied over to your chosen datastore then registered in vCenter... and the cloned datastore is unmounted... for this reason it may make sense to use the "mount datastore" on a datastore, then browse the filesystem of the clone that is mounted... fint your VMs .vmx file at register it manually... you will then be able to startup the VM and then vmotion it while running to your final destination...
