We currently have a few _very_old FAS2552 systems which is stuck at ONTAP 9.8... they currently do snapvault to a system with ONTAP 9.16.1 without any issues (only NFS volumes)...
Acording to NetApp's Compatibility Matrix 9.8 is compatible up til 9.13... The FAS2552 is obviously out of "everything", and we have plans to move the workloads...
But has anyone tested SnapMIrror between 9.17.1 and 9.8 ? 😉 My fear is that it stops working at this next major upgrade...

...thinking out loud: Maybe I could setup two ONTAP Simulators to test it... if it's possible to download a simulator at versionb 9.8 that is... 🙂 ...nope 9.10.1 is the oldest simulator... ONTAP Select to the rescue 🙂

Even if your testing goes smoothly, the trouble with configuring outside of what's qualified is more about what unexpected behavior you may run into down the road in production. Perhaps during a critical event like a DR scenario.
Don't forget that 9.8 will also be self-service after this calendar year.

Yep we are fully aware and this isn't critical production, but it would involve some extra work if it stopped working... 🙂

Tested it in my lab, 9.8 to 9.17.1 works.
