#What does the imposer board do on 2.5" SAS disks?

On older 3.5" SATA disks there was a converter/imposer board at the back of the disk that converted it to a SAS interface, but on the "later" NL-SAS disks this was removed and the disk was fitted futher back in the caddy hence no need for the converter/imposer board... makse sense...
But why is there still a board on the 2.5" SAS caddies? To my knowlegde there wasn't a SATA disk in 2.5"? Also the "current" 2.5" SAS disks still have this board behind them... why? And what does the board do?

those only do power sequencing/hot swap protection, they are not involved in the datapath at all (you can check for yourself if you open them up, they only contain some passive components, a small eeprom and a power distribution chip (TPS2320 IIRC)
