#Best way to find unused volumes

Hi, I have been looking into enabling inactive data reporting for volumes to determine unused/inactive data in the volumes, but I am wondering if there are any other ways to determine the same.

I know one can always look at the AIQUM for IOPS history, but are there any other ways to achieve this ? And are there any performance considerations for using the Inactive data reporting feature ?

There is a "zombie report" in AIQUM that reports on volumes that are not in use. We have used that successfully at my customer.

I think the best way is to look at Max IOPs over the last month (or more if you're really paranoid) to make sure it has been 0 through month-ends, etc. Unfortunatley, that is not available in AIQUM. It may be available in Cloud Insights, but I haven't played around with that yet to know for sure.

Hi @bitter fable , so would Inactive Data Reporting feature not be effective here ? and do we only have to rely on AIQUM if we don't have Cloud Insights ?

You may be able to use Grafana as well. Usually, volumes with no IOPS are what you are looking for.

the next version of Harvest (25.11) to be released in the next week or two will include panels on hot and cold data as shown below. If you want to try this feature sooner, you can grab a nightly build. Let us know what you think

hi @split sierra how did you install Harvest?

split sierra
#

System is already installed and running i just upgraded the system through the ui and seemed to have gone smoothley

tough chasm

I mean did you install Harvest natively, deb, rpm, nabox, container, something else?

split sierra

Nabox

thanks - try deleting all the dashboards from nabox - it will recreate them and hopefully you will see the new row in the volume dashboard

Thorugh the grafana ui?

Thanks for the help if it doesnt work I will reach out tommorow 🙏🙏

thanks, please do!

Okay it shows the panels but says "no data" what could be the issue?

No I.was under the impression that this panels is suppose to track metrics about use of data in volumes to determine what is called/dead data.
Is configuring cloud tiering a must?

In the past, I've used AIQUM and System Manager to identify unused volumes. In AIQUM, select Workload Analysis and then All Workloads. Select Filter and apply the following filters.

  • Type is File Share
  • Recommended Performance Service Level is Waiting for IO

Once you have this list of volumes, you can then use System Manager to investigate each volume for last access details.

Storage --> Volumes --> File System --> Explorer
Ensure analytics is on and check last accessed times at the bottom of the page.

@tough chasm Isn't there a way to find cold data for a volume without any tiering, the main objective is for customers (who do not have proper documentation) to identify unused volumes which can be deleted so that space is reclaimed.
