Does anyone know if this is possible, without signing up for a support contract? Or are we stuck with finding another refurb unit that is pre-licensed for it? The base feature pack that came with this one did not include volume encryption.

You will not be able to get one, not will you be able to get a support contract if you are not the original owner of the equipment.

Exactly and they are doing it with axing still preety good hardware. In few years we will have very nice pile of "junk" aff a250 asa c250 that cannot run prod because of eos. That we've just bought (last year). Not so good eco and green approach 😉

NetApp has the e-waste program but I don't think it says what happens with the equipment after that.

that is just making sure that everything gets recycled properly. Basically what is required by law in the EU already, just extended to the rest of the world
