#Hot-added a NS224 to a HA pair with DS224....

Hi,
So today I hot-added a diskshelf (NS224) to a A400HA with existing DS224...
All disks show as broken I wondered why. After some googling I discovered that you cannot mix SED disks with regular disks it seems?

Any recommendation or tips on how to proceed would be appreciated!

What's on top of my mind now is adding cluster switches and add another A400HA we got laying around to connect the disk shelf towards that A400HA and then decom old node/switches when we moved all the data to the new node.

Update: Seems like SED is compatible with SED/None SED?
Its NSE that isnt compatible with none NSE in same HA pair if I understood it correctly

only FIPS drives are incompatible with others. SED drives are not necessarily FIPS drives. NSE originally referred to FIPS drives in particular, but recently NetApp has also called regular SED drives "NSE". So check if you have FIPS NSE drives, and if so, then yes, you cannot mix them with non FIPS drives (forcompliance reasons)

Hi @uneven cobalt , we do not run FIPS.
I found a KB stating you need to enable "bootarg.storageencryption.support true" which I did, took down one node at a time and enabled it.

The disks are still showing as broken, and I cannot edit any of them because "they do not exist".

What do I need to power cycle something?

it doesn't matter if you "run FIPS" (whatever that means). There are some disks that are FIPS compliant (aka "NSE disks") and some disks that are not FIPS compliant. You cannot mix the two types of disks in one HA pair

#

please post the product numbers (X-numbers) of the disks that you have, and the new disks. you can double check in HWU if they are compatible

X4013 and X358

X358A disks are FIPS disks, the X4013 are non-FIPS

And that would do it

so you basically have some very expensive paperweight sitting in your datacenter 🙂 you should probably contact NetApp (or whoever sold you the disks) and hope that they will take them back and ship you the correct ones

I see.
Jesus...

Big thanks for the help, educated me well!

#

Can you get a side by side comparision between the disks in HWU or did you jump into to them seperatly btw?

I looked at them separately

#

if you go to your system and click on "supported drives/shelves" you can see them all in one big list

#

like this. but it's a long list so it's still not really "side-by-side"

crystal shadow
#

Yeah I searched for them seperatly and saw X358 was FIPS and X4013 was SED

Again big thanks for the education, really appreciate it!

Last question @uneven cobalt , should we remove the disk shelf vi added today asap, or doesn't it matter if its sits there for a few days?
