#Volume backup to S3 ?

I can see that it is possible to backup your volumes to S3 (StorageGRID), but all slides and descriptions I have read shows BlueXP in the mix, which we would like to avoid if possible, because we try to run a mostely "dark" site where possible.... Have someone tried to backup FlexVols to StorageGRID? Does it work more or less like SnapMirror? (and I apologize beforehand as I have not read everything about this in detail) 🙂

you can configure it manually but it's not really designed for this (and thus it's not really documented). You get no indexing that way and I think also no single-file restore capability.
However, there are other backup tools besides BlueXP that can be used with SnapMirror Cloud, like Cleondris

It's documented here (using System Manager as the orchestrator for SnapMirror Cloud): https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap/data-protection/cloud-backup-with-snapmirror-task.html

We do have some customers using it (because it's free) but yes it's very basic. Only SG and ONTAP S3 as object storage targets. And most features of SnapMirror cloud are not implemented. So no object locking, archive tiers, single-file restore is possible but only via CLI (which kind of is not supported because you need diag Cmds). Also your restore target can only be the original source-cluster (there are also ways to restore to other clusters but again not supported).
Also has not really been updated since 9.9.1. I wouldn't do it.

ah right I keep forgetting that System Manager can also be used 😂
The CLI commands are still not very well-documented

# buoyant sand I think we will give the dark-site setup a go... I can see the video is 2 years ...

Single file and folder restore are supported - you can refer here for latest restore capabilities - unless explicitly mentioned all features are available in dark site as well.

I take it that the "Cloud Manager" mentioned in the video is now BlueXP, and this is what I need to setup in what they now call "Private" setup... which doesn't seem to be a bit more involved than described in the video 🙂

So I am close now 🙂 I have not setup BlueXP as I do not think I need it? I have setup a Tennant on out StorageGRID, setup a Cloud Object Store with the "use by" set to SnapMirror... seems OK... When I try to set the policy on a volume I am asked for a "SnapMirror Cloud API Key" which I have created OK, yet when I copy/paste it in, I get this "Internal error. Failed to create access token."...

Hmmm I remember something

#

Remove the 2x = at the end of the API key and try again

Thanks!

Yeah as mentioned I don't think many people are using this

So now I just need a "SnapMirror cloud license" which apparently isn't included in ONTAP One?

slim chasm
#

I don't think it's needed if your SnapMirror Cloud destination is StorageGRID

buoyant sand

It requests it... 🙂

slim chasm
#

Yeah I was wrong it's still needed... it's so stupid

#

You need to contact sales

#

"Locate and record the cluster UUID for the cluster you want to license.
The cluster UUID is required when you submit your request to order the ONTAP One Compatibility bundle for your cluster.

Contact your NetApp sales team and request the ONTAP One Compatibility bundle."

#

If your cluster has ONTAP One, you should get this for free, basically 0$ quote.

Finally got the required licenses 🙂 Apparently you have to order the "ONTAP One Compatibility Bundle" which then gives you "SnapLock, Multitenant Encryption Key Management, Anti-ransomware" which already is included in my ONTAP One license... but you also get "SnapMirror cloud" and "SnapMirror S3 External" which are locked to the cluster ID. Not sure if you need both to go the snapmirror to storagegrid? But after installing the licenses it works great... One thing I forgot was the created bucked was done without Object Lock enabled, but when you backup a volume with SnapLock enabled, it tries to lock the objects down which triggers an alert from the StorageGRID... sadly you cannot enable this after the fact, so will have to create a new bucket. But it ran the backup anyway... 🙂

#

Restoring is a bit different because to need to go to the Protection -> Relationships -> Local Sources and restore from there.. and you then get this... which to me seems backwards somehow? 😉 but again it works great... you just enter the restore volume (which is created automatically) under source... and it will restore the volume...

#

Would have been easier if NetApp actually put all licenses in the ONTAP One bundle... wasn't that the point of "One"? 😉
