Hi everyone,

I’m exploring BGP configurations with ONTAP and have a question about multi-hop BGP. Specifically, does ONTAP support multi-hop BGP configurations?

My understanding is that the routes on the underlying vserver will ensure that BGP connections from the BGP LIFs will happily route the BGP traffic. In theory, this should allow us to set up routing to ensure BGP traffic can traverse intermediate hops and reach the required router.

Can anyone confirm if this is possible or share insights on configuring multi-hop BGP with ONTAP? Any guidance, best practices, or considerations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Hi mikenye, nice question. With multi-hop BGP you mean a chain/group of BGP router with different AS numbers?

Yes, ONTAP supports multi-hop by default. I have implemented such a solution with 1 intermediate hop in our lab and it works fine. On the switch side I have simply set disable-connected-check as that was the easiest

Thanks @restive plaza and @pliant saddle

Getting this error with vserver dr resync any idea what can be done, we don’t want network config to be replicated.

Add -discard-configs network to the SnapMirror policy you're using for your vserver-DR relationship.

But what does that have to do with the original question regarding BGP?
