#Do I really need upgrading Ontap 9.6p3 to the latest P before a major upgrade (ex: 9.8+)?

Even knowing that Ontap 9.6 reached its End of Limited Support period? In this case, it's a FAS8200. It seems a best practice, but... good question.

We have run into issues where a ONTAP version we upgraded to had an expired certificate which broke the upgrade process... and I think it could have been avoided by upgrading to the latest patch and then to next version... so I would advise to follow that...

yeah. If memory servers, there were MANY of in the field (lots of NetApp A-Teamers) that gave NetApp lots of heads up warning, but for some reason it never made the cut. We are certainly not seeing those issues any more, but if the code is old enough, it is entirely possible. I know in the past year I have done the 8.2 -> 9.8 dance (8.2 -> 8.2.4P6 -> 8.3.2P2 -> 9.1P20 -> 9.3P21 -> 9.5P19 -> 9.7P23 ->9.8Px) and did not have a single issue with certificate. As indicated, this is the last P release on each version as well.
