Is is possible to move disks from an E2812 (12 disk model) to a E2860 (60 disk model) and retain your volumes/data?

Hi! Maybe...
If you have the E2812 setup as traditional R6 groups its could be possible with volume export/import (CLI only).
If you are using DDP that option is not available.
If DDP then you could potentially use the Remote Storage Volume feature to migrate data.
See this topic, its a bit old but should give some additional information and links. https://community.netapp.com/t5/EF-E-Series-SANtricity-and-Related-Plug-ins/E-series-controller-swap/td-p/169265

Thanks for the reply... So I guess there are some configuration stored on the controllers then... So if you really wanted to convert an E2816 to E2860 I guess you could just move the controllers into the NE460 shelf together with the disks, and it should be happy.... of cause I would not try this with any kind of important data... but it may just save us some time.. (we need the extra capacity and we don't have the rack space ) 😉 the 460 shelfs are very compact... 🙂

If I have learned anything about E-Series then it is that they are very picky. About basically everything. If you move a controller from a 12-bay chassis into a 60-bay chassis, chances are that the controller goes into lockdown because it is not expecting that chassis. And if the controller is in Lockdown, it's rather involved getting it out again (simply rebooting or plugging it back in its original chassis usually is not enough). So yeah, feel free to try it but have the commands ready that you need for clearing any lockdown 😉

the easiest way is probably to swap the disks and completely wipe them, then restore the data from a backup or whatnot.
You still might have to clear the DacStore on the drives first though
