#Seeking for details in steps to upgrade A400 to A800. Can we use ARL method?

The head swap may be an old topic, and Upon my understanding, Aggregates Relocation can be used. We are in 9.11.1p11

Will the document below be the one I can use. If yes, I couldn't find references about supported steps to upgrade A400 to A800:
https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap-systems-upgrade/pdfs/sidebar/Upgrade_by_using_ARL.pdf

What addtional information should pay attention on, for instance, any changes on networking or shef connections?

Are you planning to use the internal drive bays of the a800?

Good to know there is the option of using internal drive bays.

To answer your question:
With current A400, we have 60 disks in 3 "DS224-12" shelves. To continue to utilize the same capacity and spend less, I would say that we have no plan to use the internal drives.

Any advices to my original questions please?

Sorry about that.

#

it's not documented cause it's not really a direct swap. i.e. internal drives. vs an external shelf.

#

I beleive it's doable to swap into what would be an "empty" A800. i've just not seen it.

#

There is an offline process to move the disks over to the internal slots. (this is common with the smaller systems like the 26/27 series.

Did you mean we have to first fill up or put some disks into internal drive bay from A400 to A800 in order to do head swap?

Yes, it's supported to do an ARL from A400 to A800.

The docs-pages have been improved but it's still too confusing imo. Start here: https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap-systems-upgrade/upgrade-arl/index.html

Basically there is an automated method with "system controller replace" and a manual one. With the automated ONTAP guides you what to do next and checks if do it correctly.
For the automated method:

@small garnet he can’t move sas-SSD into the x800. Only nvme

#

You should be able to do the arl. You will need to move the x2071 cards over to supported slots

Yes. I second this.

#

I can tell you from experience, if the upgraded system that you are going to is not in the column on the right, then the upgrade will stop/fail after you have replaced the first node. At this point you need to continue with the manual method

#

I was told by Netapp “it should work” but days later I told Netapp didn’t work

@copper kite
So, what you are saying, it should be supported as said in your first line. But, you are not sure, at your 3rd bullet since it is not mentioned in the document?

Yes, I definitely will ask P.S for the work, but, just wanted to know as much as I can in advaance

@copper kite it will fail

#

It will start and after the first head is swapped in and detected ONTAP will validate the upgrade path and if it is not in that list then the upgrade stops right then and there

You're only talking about the "system controller replace" method, right?

#

well that's what I said 😄

woven fog

Yes. I can say I’ve actually done it and what the outcome is if it isn’t on that list.

I have never seen the "system controller replace" method work reliably. it always broke at some point for me. The manual method is straightforward and easy after you've done it a few times 🙂
