Good morning,
Planning on adding a FAS to our existing cluster, however the FAS is running 9.14 while the main cluster is currently at ONTAP 9.12.
I am aware of Mixed config, but would ideally prefer both at ONTAP 9.14 before joining.
What's the best approach? Wipe / downgrade FAS, add nodes, then upgrade to ONTAP 9.14.

Best approach is updating your cluster to 9.14.1 then adding the new nodes. We're at P7 already so it's quite mature already.
Wiping the new nodes and installing 9.12.1 is of course also possible but makes no sense if you want to update to 9.14.1 anyways.
And while you're at it you can already check and maybe update the OS of your cluster-switches so they're compatible with 9.14.1.

I would simply jump to the OT version you want to be on.
If you have a hard reason to be on 9.12, then downgrade.
But imo being on 9.14.1 is a better solution in the long run than lingering.
