This TR, written by Michael Peppers, recommends an SVM management lif; I am not sure why that is. I only use a cluster management, why must I have SVM management LIFs?

Are there any backup applications which need to login to ONTAP to trigger snapshots, etc?

Sometimes it makes sense to only let them log into the relevant SVM and not the whole cluster.

If you only want to serve LUNs it's not 100% necessary to have a dedicated SVM mgmt LIF.

Ok, thank you. I will have SnapCenter in July, but the TR didn't mention the reason and I wanted to verify

With SnapCenter it's possible to either add the SVM or the whole cluster: https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/snapcenter/install/task_add_storage_systems.html

This is a useful function for several reasons, it isn't required by any means.
We use them to limit access to people/groups so they can only do things on systems they have data on, as well as our AV scanning tools, backup tools (as stated), etc.
it's just about how much granual control you want to have/give
