#Node panic when using USB?

We had a "strange" issue where we had to replace one node in a A300 cluster. As a part of the process we removed the node that was bad, and then inserted the node node (not 100%) then connected a serial to wireless "dongle" into the running nodes USB-A port, which seemed to trigger a reset/panic of the node... thankfully this was not a critical cluster, but it did *uck up the RDB which we had to recover... then process has been completed now without problems... I was just wondering if anyone else have tried sumething similar while using the USB-A port... as mantioned we only use this for powering the "AIRCONSOLE 2.0 MINI"... we are not 100% sure if the dongle does anything else than just pulling power... we left the dongle in the port for power, and it worked without any issues afterwards, so it seemed to be just as we inserted it.... I would not do this again on a production system that's for sure 😉

the USB-A port is only supported for USB sticks with the recovery image on it. Normally plugging something else in should just be ignored but it's not a far-fetched idea that plugging in something "weird" could reset the node

I'd open a support ticket on that so that it can be tested and, if warranted, fixed.

One of our older FAS 8200 had a similar issue.
We had remote hands attempt to plug a USB drive into our IBM SVC and he plugged in to the wrong system.
The system basically locked up and did nothing until it was hard powered off and back on.
Couldn't access the system via anything, not even console.
As Darkstar said, it should only be the recovery image on the drive in their specific format, that's what it's looking for.
Not even sure the system has a USB stack that functions normally

Well since the A300 is the same HW as the FAS8200 I guess it's a "known issue"... I think I will leave the USB ports alone for now 🙂 I will order a new dongle from AIRCONSOLE with an internal battery and use that instead 😉 Funny thing is, that I have been using the USB ports on many other NetApp's before, and just experienced this now... not sure how many A300/FAS8200, but some, and a lot of FAS25XX->FAS2700 and even the new C250 and C800 without issues.. maybe I have just been lucky all these other times 😉

there are usb adapter cables that only carry the power lines. Those will work just fine

Looking at this old thread... @vivid marlin were you trying to use the USB console port? The one that exposes a built-in RS232-USB widget t o your laptop?

#

although that's a mini or micro USB, IIRC

No the USB console port is USB-micro as far as I remember... I used the USB-A which I think is normally used for loading ONTAP and other firmwares... instead of netbooting I guess... my guess is that this was caused by the "AIRCONSOLE" that I plugged in... I haven't had the time to test this further...

Maybe just need to keep a separate little USB power adaptor with the Airconsole widget, with whatever plug you need for your racks.
