#Can we hot-swap a shelf without downtime or rebooting the nodes.

The workaround requires shelf replacement, but we cannot afford downtime as the cluster is running critical services.

This disk shelf is directly connected to the SAS port and it is the only shelf in the stack

We are planning to delete the aggregate which is created on disks from this shelf.

Remove disk ownership then proceed with removing this shelf and replace the shelf.

Please advise if this possible ??

So long as no disks on that shelf belong to an aggregate, you should be ok as long as you are careful with the cabling.
I just did something similar with an a400 with switch attached ns224 shelves. We evacuated the shelf. Set the shelf ID then power cycled the shelf. No problem even though disks were owned.

Just make sure there are no aggregate disks on the shelf

Disk show -shelf <id>
Look for any aggregates under container-name

Absolutely disk shelves can be replaced without downtime, as long as no disks in the shelf are members of any aggregate. We do this very often in the field.

@open plank can you verify your ONTAP version as well?

Just to add to what the everyone said above, once you verify that there are no aggregates on the shelf, you then need to unassign all disks on that shelf. You may need to also turn off option disk.autoassign. When you verify there are no owned disks on that shelf you can remove it.

Good call on the autoassign. It's a great feature, except when you're doing maintenance or something "outside the box" 🙂

TMAC this is from the docs - https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap-systems/sas3/hot-remove-shelf.html
Best practice: The best practice is to remove disk drive ownership after you remove the aggregates from the disk drives in the disk shelves you are removing.

Removing ownership information from a spare disk drive allows the disk drive to be properly integrated into another node (as needed).

The procedure for removing ownership from disk drives requires you to disable disk ownership automatic assignment. You reenable disk ownership automatic assignment at the end of this procedure.

Sure thing. I won’t disagree. I said you don’t have to😁
