#Old NetApp NAS

you need a valid support contract to download ONTAP
Out of curiosity what is the hardware you have?
They cannot make this condition in my country, this is illegal.
It is a FAS2240-2
That too, it's an old system.
I cannot give legal advice (not even for my own country 😉 ) , and every other solution I could offer would be illegal as well so... 😉
But back to your original question, you said you need ONTAP to "manage your NAS"... which is wrong, ONTAP is the OS that is installed on your NetApp system, you don't need to download anything to manage it. You can just SSH to it via PuTTY or serial console
We’ve stopped supporting that model and all versions of the OS that runs on it.
yeah but if it still runs there's no need to download anything. And if it was sanitized then the licenses are gone anyway and it would only be a very heavy paperweight
So I'll need to access it via serial console, because some stupid person deactivated ssh
maybe you are just trying SSH on the wrong IP? turning SSH off would be a very strange thing to do but who knows
Any compliance with Brazilian laws is the responsibility of NetApp Brazil, which we do not represent and this notice cannot be considered service. If you have any concerns about NetApp Brazil’s compliance with Brazilian law, please address it to them.
I have tried, however I could not, their phone number doesn't work, it is redirected to global NetApp. The thing is that in Brazil, you cannot attach the software to a support contract, since is called tie-in sale. I've contacted support and they informed if I need the management software of my equipment I should sign a new support contract. And for sure, this is not legal. I'll try to contact our lawyers to check what we can do in this case, however, it's kinda strange that even paying 165k usd in total to the project of implementation of NetApp system, I received an answer like that.
This is just to prove my point
Support gave you the wrong answer, but the outcome is the same - we no longer provide anyone with the software for the FAS2240, there are no contracts covering that model any longer
But NetApp support is responsible for what they say to customer, they represent NetApp
This is the point
The system would have shipped with either 7 mode or clustered ontap - clustered ontap is managed on box with no additional software. 7 mode had a Java and flash app which is useless now
And 7 mode you can manage through SSH
I'll try to connect it using serial cable, and enable ssh
Otherwise I'll throw it away
And buy a new system not só expensive
This system would be 10-12 years old at this point
So.. it’s far past time to replace it
I understand it
However I need to access the disks tô retrieve all my data from there
I just got hired now, and we have a lot of old equipment, I'm changing it one by one, but will take some time
if it still has data on it then you don't need to download any software from netapp anyways. you only need that if you want to "factory reset" it
It might have telnet enabled if ssh isn’t
The good thing is the vms that was there, I could retrieve it using esxi
yeah, and the BMC should have ssh enabled as well (it's a separate rj45 port on the controller)
Good to know
I was afraid to reset it and lose all data
Thanks for your advice, I'll try it tomorrow
that's not entirely true though, with a valid support contract you can still download ONTAP 9.1 which was the last release to run on the 2240 IIRC
I have the root password, they used in past a flash version, which I have downloaded windows XP, to try to access it
The important part is true - there’s no support contracts for a 2240
but if he had, say, a support contract for a newer system, he could get access to the old software too. without support of course 🙂
Sure
depending on whether it's running 7-mode or cDOT, the commands to use are a bit different but they are still documented if you google for them. if your prompt (after logging in) looks like foo> then it's 7-mode, if it looks like foo::> it's cDOT
but if you're using rootI'm pretty sure it's 7-mode (cDOT uses admin as default login... although someone might have added a user named rootjust for nostalgia... you never know 😉 )
