#Disk shelf stacking question

depends on the system type. if you had like a 27xx or 28xx, there's no real option for a second stack. if you have something with multiple sas ports, have seperate stacks.
We're using fas8200a then should i seperate stacks?
Yes. You don’t have to, but you should
I m so confused lol
Sas drives and sata drives behave differently. A long time (before Ontap 9.1) it was not a good idea to mix in the same stack as it would adversely affect performance. It was always recommended that if possible separate SAS and SATA into separate stacks. In ONTAP 9.1 there was some code to fix certain issues with snapshots and aggregates that resolved said uses. However, nearly everyone still thinks that it is a great idea/best practice to keep them separated, if possible.
Sometimes it not possible. The fas 26xx/27xx only have two ports so only a single stack. The larger fas units have 4 x SAS ports so you can do two stacks. However if you have a lot of disks it works be best to balance across the stacks for performance ( like I have 6 shelves of sas and two of sata). In this case I might do 3 plus 1 on each stack to balance.
Ok well Thanks teams!!
I will seperate DS212 and DS224 stacks.
Many thanks
Of course you also need 8 longer sas cables to do two stacks. If you only have 4, then you’re stuck with one stack. I run into that quite a bit. The sales guy doesn’t consult me on the quotes and ends up with a lot of shelves and a single stack because I’ve got 4 long cables and a lot of the really short (0.5m) daisy chain cables
