Alpine Linux. As of 3.4 it's running 3.18.4

I saw it was containerized, and then saw the BSD licensing terms, and wondered what was under the covers. Haven't installed it yet so I'd have no opportunity to look at the shell or the Maint. page yet.

I think I can pitch it as an appliance, because that's really what it is, and avoid the whole "nonstandard OS!" debate with sysadmin who will never need to touch it.

that's right, nabox is a packaged appliance. If you want to install Harvest yourself there are lots of other options: RPM, DEB, native, containers

I've done it the hard way at a previous job, I'm not really interested in going through that if I don't need to. :)

Yes it should really be considered as an appliance. 3.x is Alpine, 4.x will be something else
