I was just wondering if it is possible to reuse a DS460C shelf and convert it into like a E2860 or E5760? Basically just replacing the IOM12 modules with E-Series controllers, and of cause E-Series disks... (I guess they are not formatted with 520 blocks?) And I am aware that this is of cause not supported, but would it work?

that should work I guess. I haven't done it, and if you need the disks and controllers anyway why not get a full system instead.. But yeah, it should work (provided the shelf is recent enough, I remember when they first came out the DS60 shelves were somehow different between ONTAP and E-Series)
The IOMs are in fact slightly different. They have different firmware and part numbers
I recall looking at this in the past year and was told not going to work by NetApp
for the IOMs that may be true but if you plug a controller in, that should work, right?
The X-numbers for the IOM12B might be different but aren't they both the 111-04850 ?
Right. The controller is supported but not in the ds460c. I’ll try and dig later but I’m pretty sure I found something that the ioms are different. They most certainly run different code/firmware
We will not be useing the IOM12 modules. The plan was just to add two E-Series controllers instead of the existing IOMs... The disks are another thing.. I am pretty sure ONTAP disks will not work as is... they will need a new e-series firmware and possible a reformat to 512blocks?
