We have FAS8040 and FAS8020 decommissioned and will be disposed. Just wanted to check can we reuse the miniSAS HD cables and disks (SAS) for any other storage ?

If you mean other NetApp: check with your account team.

If you mean non-NetApp: Some people have done it. NetApp disks are low-level formatted with 520 byte sectors instead of 512 (to account for metadata storage), so standard operating systems don't recognize them natively. There are ways to reformat them to 512 byte, but for that you might want to ask /r/homelab over on Reddit.

From a technical point of view, the disks will generally work assuming you’ve zeroed them and removed ownership. There are some caveats on how to mix 6 and 12G SAS in stacks, you can’t mix encryptable plain disks on the same HA pair, and be aware of EOSL dates if you’re planning to use them in production, and you should pay a support uplift if doing so, but that’s a business issue not a technical one. If you have a dual chassis 8060/8080, throw away the HA cables to save yourself grief later - they look like SAS ones but don’t work.
