I purchased a used Netapp FAS270 (yes I know its old and out of support) .
Problem is I cannot get it set up without a contract and licences since I am an individual who just want to learn how it works. The company I do work for is a Netapp Customer so I figured that I could use this to learn at home and give myself some extra skills.
I am totally new to Netapp and did not realize there was all these restrictions.
Is there any way I can get this Very heavy paperweight to work or is it just junk?
It was completely wiped by the previous owner so at the moment I cannot even access it as I am not sure exactly how to at this point.

Unfortunately not much you can do without licenses and software, which are non-transferable.

Additionally, the FAS270 is really old. I don't believe you could even find the software for it on NetApp's site if you had full access.

On top of that, the newest version of ONTAP that it ran is ancient and completely different than what runs on current systems, so even if you got it running, it wouldn't serve to make you familiar with modern NetApp software. 😦 Sorry.

A better bet for you to learn is the software simulator.

It’s a cool tech-ie collectable though.

The FAS270 are built like a tank. I have one running as a backup system that I'm spinning up now and then. Sure, it is a bit weak with the dual-core 650MHz MIPS CPU and 1gig of RAM, but it boots fast and does a decent job running NFS workloads

Connect via serial at boot up, Cisco pin out, 9600 8N1. Turn on console logging, Control-C for boot menu, option 4a - wipe and initialise, then when it’s in setup mode, let us know. If it doesn’t get there, upload the log to pastebin or put it as an attachment here and let us know

#

And then once basic setup and ssh setup is done.. set up something to SSH in and run “license add AAAAAAA”, then “license add AAAAAAB” etc until you get enough codes for the features you want

You’ll hit it waaay before you exhaust the keyspace

I can’t see any other docs on setting up a FAS270 🤣

(but that's basically the exact same way I reverse-engineered the keys, like, 10 or 15 years ago? 😄 )

I s there a way to access the console without a serial connection? I have no machines here with a db9 connection.

nope, buy one from amazon or ebay for $5

this bundle looks good. avoid the USB to RJ45 serial cables - I've not had good experiences with them
