#FAS8080 node crash when doing large backups?

We have a legacy FAS8080 that is only being used for CIFS shares. It's on 9.1.

We've purchased a new C400 to migrate the data to.

In preparation, we've also implemented a Rubrik backup appliance to backup the data. Once the backup has been done, the plan is to upgrade the FAS to 9.7 or 9.8, then migrate the data to the C400.

The problem is, when I kick off a Rubrik backup on a large (60TB) share, it crashes whichever node in the cluster is primary. Once I stop the backup, the node will eventually come back up.

Based on system node show, the nodes are actually going down, not just losing connection.

Any ideas what would cause this, and what potentially could be done?

What version of ontap and are you using fabricpool at all? At a guess it a bug- there’s a couple of NDMP related ones which cause node resets iirc, but we’d need to know the ontap version to confirm

I’d tend to agree. Update. That system can go to 9.3->9.5->9.7->9.8

It’s worth it. I’ve done a couple of these recently for customers that neglected their systems for a while (the last one i I started at ONTAP 8.2).

The system should be worlds faster and a significant number of bugs fixed.

Update to 9.1P[latest] first before you update to any newer version.

How does Rubrik access the large share? Via CIFS? (I don't think NDMP is being used by Rubrik, it can use SnapDiff though.)

Upgrade first, imo.

To 9.8 if you can, through the steps suggested

Yeah that's the plan. Was hoping to get the backups done first though.

I’ve never seen an ontap upgrade in the 9.x days need to be restored from backup

Why not just SnapMirror the data?

Minimum ontap for C400 can’t snapmirror from 9.1 and if they don’t have a support contract legally they shouldn’t upgrade the 8080. From 9.1, you have to go to 9.3, then 9.7, and 9.3 isn’t available for download anymore iirc. Aside from that, if anything goes wrong, they’ll be in a bad place technically.

(At a guess)

Sure it is. I downloaded a month or two ago for an 8.2-8.3-9.1-9.3-9.5-9.7-9.8 ONTAP update

9.3P21 in the ONTAP section

Well that’s good at least 🙂

We did get upgraded from 9.1 - 9.3 - 9.5 - 9.7. We got permission from NetApp to download the software for the FAS since we had already purchased the C400, and it's just a means to get the FAS decommed.

Currently replicating 200TB of data from 8080 to C400.

I haven't tried the Rubrik backup since upgrading, hoping the get the data on the C400 as fast as possible and start backups from there.
