#Inter-Controller communication failure

Hello. One of our arrays encountered inter-controller communication failure. Support informed us that this is an auxiliary link between both of the controllers and that it's used in upgrade scenarios. Does it mean that if it is not working, then we cannot upgrade our array ? Is the link used for something else ?
