Hi guys, i just bought a new filer (FAS2240).

and i just upgraded system firmware 8.1.2 to 8.2.5P7.

after upgarde i just tried add a new license but it was failed reasons with License add: invalid license key "....", license keys must be 28 or 42 letters in length.

i just found this kb https://kb.netapp.com/Legacy/ONTAP/7Mode/License_add%3A_invalid_license_key_"...."%2C_license_keys_must_be_28_or_42_letters_in_length

what should i do for apply my licenses ?

Hmm, **new ** FAS2240?
since Ontap 8.2+ there is a "new" license code format with license codes bound to the serial number of the controller. While inplace updating from 8.1.x to 8.2.x they are transformed internaly. When you set up the system from scatch with 8.2+ then you need the 28 letter codes

It's new to me, and the equipment itself is old.

So to use the license I used in 8.1.2, I need to configure it in 8.1.2 and raise the firmware to 8.2.5P5?

yes, that should work.

Unfortunately, there are no 8.1 versions on the support site. The oldest 8.x referenced in the changelog is 8.2.3P3, from April 2015.

Oh my god! Then the license for this equipment that is already EoS and has no service control will be difficult to use anymore? Is there a way?

Short answer is no.

LOL

The longer answer talks about grey market equipment, ITAR and “know your customer” requirements, but is essentially the same

wooden thorn
#

What is ITAR?
Sry english is not my native lang so idk lol

#

And also Grey market... lol

ITAR = International Traffic in Arms Regulations. Other Global Trade Compliance (GTC) items would apply to Alex’s longer answer as well.
Not sure if it is an option, but we have recently announced a new entry FAS system in the FAS2820 that would be a great replacement and significant upgrade over the system you have with a healthy support life ahead. https://www.netapp.com/data-storage/fas/netapp-fas2750-fas2820/

For the distributed enterprise with many locations, NetApp's FAS2750 and FAS2820 are ideal for virtualization and easy, cost-effective back up and DR, all while satisfying compliance.

If I were an engineer with a lot of money, I would have bought new equipment, but I can't because I'm a poor partner engineer..

We are going to introduce new storafe to our customers and donate the FAS2240 that they used to use to us for internal LAB. Thank you for your good suggestion though.
