You can do an ONTAP upgrade of the simulator.
upgrade works but you have to take care of increasing the aggr0 , to have space for the kit
also disable snapshots ; and take vmware snapshots with the system halted just in case to have a way to go back and not reinstall again the whole thing .
ok thanks for the heads up, Ill try increasing aggr0. (btw I run on kvm and this is crash and burn, if it goes wrong I'll just throw it away no worry!)
i dont know if you have enough space at boot to upgrade it ; i usually install a sim do the aggr0 increase stop snaps ; halt the system , take a vmware snapshot and then boot again and attempt upgrade
if that fails i can revert and spares me the time to install again an sim and increase aggr space stop snaps etc.
We use simulators pretty extensively, and always had problems with the root aggr running out of space over time. So, after much research, these are the steps I take to add disks to the simulator and expand the root aggr. We haven't had any issues since doing this, and are able to do regular OnTap upgrades on them without running ourselves out of space.
