#Initial CBS (Cloud Backup) transfer via Azure Data Box (Heavy)?

Is this possible? https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/databox/data-box-heavy-overview
And then shipping it back to Azure and moving it to Azure blob ("cool" storage tier).

Looking at around 1PB of backups. Source is an on-prem FAS8300 (ONTAP 9.11.1 latest, but willing to update to 9.12.1 if needed).

This table (https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/storage/common/storage-solution-large-dataset-moderate-high-network#recommended-options) tells me with 1Gb/s it might take over 100days. Customer is looking for a 10Gb connection (so only 1-2 weeks transfer) but not 100% sure if it's possible.

Are you thinking like a SnapMirror to Cloud kind of thing?

#

In theory you could do this.

#

But I'm not sure how you would s3 it to Azure's box.

#

I don't think you can use S3 to connect to it.

#

It's either NFS or SMB.

The customer ordered Cloud Backup Service (CBS, or "BlueXP backup and recovery" how it's called nowadays?) for 1PB. He wants to back up many many volumes from his on-prem FAS to CBS. Since the network connection might be too slow we want to copy it locally for the initial transfer and then ship it to Azure.

If I understand the Azure Data Box correctly it provides SMB or NFS shares (and even REST API? https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/azure/databox/data-box-heavy-deploy-copy-data-via-rest) . So after Azure shipped you the device, you copy all the data to the Data Box. After it's shipped back to Azure they will upload it to Azure Blob storage for example.

NetApp "only" needs to provide a way to correctly copy data to the Data Box. After Azure moved it to blob storage CBS needs to be able to read the data, understand what's inside, link it to volumes on the local FAS and let us continue using CBS for the daily incremental backups (with the regular SnapMirror Cloud stuff).

If Microsoft is willing to do that for us...

#

It's really up to Microsoft I'd think.

#

I'd check with more official channels. There are cloud architects available on the BlueXP main site.

unfortunately got not much more response there than "I do not believe this is supported by NetApp"
