#Flash cache firmware updates

some documentation that help answer your question
Firmware for Flash Cache devices is included with the upgrade package for Data ONTAP upgrades. If the running firmware is older than the firmware that is bundled with the Data ONTAP upgrade package, it is updated automatically.
what is the system model and ONTAP version you are running on these systems
FAS8300 so correct firmware
FlashCache firmware is updated during boot, I think you need to do a takeover/giveback for it to be updated properly (usually automatically done if the upgrade is done as part of an ONTAP upgrade). you should see a message during boot that the firmware is being updated on the PAM module
So needs a takeover/giveback and should be sorted?
yes. If there is a newer version of the firmware on the boot device it will update during boot. I have never updated it with storage firmware download though, I only use that for disk/shelf/qual_devices type updates. Buti f you're sure there is a new FlashCache firmware in that download package you installed, then it should auto-update on the next boot
Actually, NVMe flash cache will update firmware during live ONTAP. It actually checks periodically for new FW and downloads and activates the new FW without a reboot.
It's not like the PCIe card FlashCache from days of old
Forgot to update this thread sorry! Turned out our SAM reports were incorrect and so was the firmware we were trying to apply! Names were so similar haha
