We created our FG's and were guided in creating them as stand-along SM/SV's. I've been reading the docs, and playing, and it looks like if I create an SVM-DR with identify-preserve, then I should be able to create the FG-SM/SV and keep my configuration, Lifs, shares, exports. I tried creating an SVM-DR on the SVM which hosts the source FG's and it fails saying that I have SM/SV on a different destination.
I can't re-host my destination FG's. So how can I unify my backups now? Is there any way to do it without re-initializing the SM/SV?

Svm-dr must be on different cluster. The source and destination can’t be on the same cluster. I’ll call soonish
They are on a different cluster, dude...
You could try this: https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap/data-protection/convert-volume-svm-replication-task.html
I know this works for FlexVols, I've done it often, not sure about FlexGroups though.
You need to be at least on ONTAP 9.9.1
And you can't do cascade relationships or fan-out relationships.
Oh and you need to use the CLI not System Manager.
Go read your post. That’s not what you said. 😁
