#Is it possible to "convert" a FAS2720 to FAS2750?
1 messages · Page 1 of 1 (latest)
....and if this is not possible... would a setup with an empty shelf for the controllers, two DS60 shelfs and two DS12 shelfs be possible? (the system supports 144 disks) or does the system calculate the 144 disks by slots in the connected shelfs? You of cause waste two rack units this way... so we would rather just convert the controller...
Why? The only difference is the shelf the head is in. The 2720 has an internal 12 x 3.5” disks and the 2750 has an internal 24 x 2.5” disks. They are the same hardware spec otherwise.
well yes, but if I want to optimize rack space... so not to take up space with an empty disk shelf with just the controllers installed... say if I wanted only one specific type of disks and 144 pcs...
If you only want 3.5" disks why would you "convert" your FAS2720 to a FAS2750? The FAS2750 has slots for 2.5" disks.
I've not tested it but my guess would be that a FAS2750 with two controllers installed, without any disks inside the chassis but only in external shelves would be possible. ONTAP should see the disks. But now sure if you would get any support for that configuration.
That platform must have disks internally for the node root aggregates. Pretty sure it’s not supported to put the controller in an empty shelf
You can boot the system without disks in the shelf where the controllers are installed, provided you have other disks attached...
The question was if it was possible... I heard that if you do it on a running system (with ONTAP and data aggregates, you will get a "Unsupported chassis" error... There can be lots or reason why you would want to convert from one to the other... I would just like to know if it would be possible if you started from scratch?
Fun fact.... there is even a way to convert the FAS2700 series into an A220... you just need to set an environment variable... but I think it is not reversible and I guess NetApp support would not aprove 😉
afaik it works just fine. There's a single part number for the controller if it's in a FAS2750 or FAS2720
additionally, while the FAS2240 complained in some DS4243 chassis, there is only one functional version of the DS2246 chassis, so it should be fine
