Has anyone done this multihop upgrade ? Whats the gut feel of this is it successful.

Customer has 2554 with 9.3P6

I thinking of just doing 4 upgrades

Weekend 1
Sat Morning: 9.3P6 -> 9.3P21
Sat Morning: 9.3P21 - > 9.5P19
Sun Morning: 9.5P19 -> 9.7P21

Weekend 2
Sat Morning: 9.7P21 -> 9.8P17

No FC, No iSCSi just CIFS and NFS SVM's

lgtm

but be aware, if your FAS currently has high CPU-utlitization this will not improve things... the CPUs in FAS25XX are just too slow / not enough cores for all the additional features and background processes added with the newer ONTAP-versions

but FAS25XX is EOS anyways, so...

Is it a general recommendation to upgrade first to the latest P release before moving on to a new Major release?
Don't think I've seen that in the Upgrade advisor.

It's mentioned here: https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap/upgrade/concept_upgrade_paths.html#types-of-upgrade-paths

"It is a best practice to upgrade first to the latest patch release in the same ONTAP release family and then upgrade to the next supported major release. This will ensure that any issues in your current version of ONTAP are resolved before upgrading.
For example, if your system is running ONTAP 9.3P9 and you are planning to upgrade to 9.11.1, you should first upgrade to the latest 9.3 patch release, then follow the upgrade path from 9.3 to 9.11.1."
