We are in the process of migrating from FC datastores to NFS datastores, currently, there are no any NFS datastores created yet. Also, we are only use VSC within ONTAP Tools for VMware, not VASA, or SRA, which means VSC will be only used for these settings between VMware and NFS datastores.

So, my question is when should I deploy OTV(VSC), should I wait for at least one NFS datastore to be created?

No you should use OTV/VSC to deploy all of the NFS datastores. It creates and mounts everything with best practices already configured. Then you can just storage vMotion the VMs between the two and decommission the FC datastores/volumes

Thanks!
A follow-up question: There are two major functions with OTV/VSC as my understanding. One is to provision and export datastores. The other is to set recommended values in ESXi hosts. Is there anyway, can I just allow VMware admin to use the 2nd function without using 1st function?

The roles for VMware and NetApp storage are belong to two different groups here. Storage group have been using manual way to provision and mount NFS datastores since day one. We understand using VSC is recommended but we are not ready to allow VMware guys to do this yet.

@void dune might have to weigh-in on the level of granularity OTV can get to

With regards what these NFS parameters and values, my understanding is that I need to follow the link and the sections of "ESXi advanced configuration" and "NFS Settings" https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/ontap-tools-vmware-vsphere/configure/reference_esxi_host_values_set_by_vsc_for_vmware_vsphere.html#esxi-advanced-configuration.

  1. All I need to do is just to set these 10 parameters/values on EACH ONE OF ESXi hosts. Correct?
  2. In my case, since we don't use it for provisioning datastores, so, once parameters are all set by using OTV/VSC, unless they need to be changed late, otherwise, I don't use OTV/VSC anymore. Correct?

Sorry team, I completely missed this.

You can definitely restrict certain users from being able to provision datastores using something like the pre-canned read-only role for example.

#

When you install OTV is creates our pre-canned default roles in the vCenter role list.
