#Once the size of filesystem on FSx ONTAP is set, can I increase and decrease it later?

You can absolutely increase the storage capacity of the SSD storage used with an FSx ONTAP file system - https://docs.aws.amazon.com/fsx/latest/ONTAPGuide/increase-primary-storage.html
Learn how to increase the storage capacity and the amount of SSD IOPS configured on your Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP file system.
Thanks!
We have a FSx ONTAP, it's been around 48% for long time, obviously we provisioned too much, and paid unnecessary amount. Since we could not decrease the size of the FS, the only way is to provision a new FSxO, and move the workloads over. Right?
What is an appropriate capacity usage we should maintain?
Hey @empty grove via our BlueXP control plane, you can setup syncs between various systems and solutions including AWS FSx for ONTAP. https://docs.netapp.com/us-en/cloud-manager-replication/task-replicating-data.html - so that may be something you can look at. In terms of sizing, take a look at https://docs.aws.amazon.com/fsx/latest/ONTAPGuide/choose-ssd-capacity.html - something to consider is the capacity pool tiering which can affect the amount of data stored on the SSD storage capacity.
When choosing amount of SSD storage capacity for your FSx for ONTAP file system, you need to keep in mind the following items that impact the amount of SSD storage available for storing your data:
So, since there is no way we can decrease the size of FS, we will have to provision a new FSx instance with a right size, and move the workloads to the new one. Right?
Hi @empty grove I suspect there is probably a few different ways to solve this situation. I am def not 100% sure which one is right for you. If you're managing this AWS FSx ONTAP instance through BlueXP, we do have a chat service you can use to get help and advice. Just login to the bluexp control plane and the chat button is hovering on the bottom right I believe. If you've deployed this directly through AWS, you can drop AWS Support a message and they will likely advise you what options you have.
I'll also follow up some folks internally to see what the options are here.
General recommendation I got internally was to create a new second (smaller) FSx ONTAP instance, and you can leverage the ontap snapmirror feature to then sync the data to the new instance.
You can migrate your NetApp ONTAP file systems to Amazon FSx for NetApp ONTAP using NetApp SnapMirror.
