#Netapp to HP Nimble Storage

Hello,

we have a working Netapp Setup with FAS2720 9.7P9 Version connected to Fujitsu ESXi (VMWare 5.5). With multiple VMs running on 3 ESXi Systems but they are residing entirely on Netapp Storage.

We are thinking of moving this entire setup to private Cloud using HP Nimble cloud storage. This cloud is currently owned by one of our departments and are ready to give us space(in terms of storage) and ESXis(VMI Cluster) to run our VMs on a rental basis. So immediate advantage for us is more space, more network speed, DR Setup and not anymore worry about the hardware. Their hardware consists of Nimble Cluster Storage, Synergy 12000 Blades.

Ofcourse it is in discussion phase but I still would like to ask you experts following questions.

  1. Is this really so advisable the way it is projected?

  2. Netapp Storage does support cloud. So technically it should be possible to migrate the data. What is the best strategy for this? Do we require additional licenses?

  3. Netapp Storage is all about data plus its configuration (Snapshot, User Quota Policies, Export Rules etc.). When we talk about storage space in cloud, then how are we going to control/administrate the configuration parts listed above? Or will this not be anymore possible to administrate on our own? And the Cloud administrators take Full control in their hands and we have to be dependent on them for every configuration changes? This is very important factor.

  4. Will VMs running on Netapp Storage be migrated without much efforts? Is there any documented method for this?

Your view on this will be really helpful.

Thanx in advance.
Regards,

Admin

  1. I wouldn't. 🙂 Keep it on ONTAP.

  2. Storage Vmotion? No license needed from the netapp ONTAP side.
The NetApp cloud intergration is there to allow you to interact with NetApp On-prem and Cloud based systems. it's not there to move from ONTAP to Nimble. You'd have to leverage 3rd party tools.

  3. That depends how the Nimble system is configured.
With using NetApp Cloud it depends, typically if you use CVS (Cloud Volume Services) , the end user can do the Admin. if you run CVO (Cloud Volumes ONTAP), there's admin involoved.

  4. Not from the NetApp Side, moving VMs is usually just a Storage vMotion or using somghing like SRM or Zerto.

Thanks for the reply Mike. 1. I have no choice but can only put up arguments. When they can provide, more storage, more speed and data security having redundancy then one has little room/area to counter attack. So why would not anyone go for it? 2. I am not sure about how Nimble system is configured but i just wanted to know if technically it is possible to setup multi-level Admin access or not. If Yes, we can ask for such access and manage our storage chunk on our own. If not we have no choice 😦

got ya. sorry to hear that too. I'm not a nimble expert, haven't had my hands on one in years. I do recall them having RBAC on the OS though. Maybe someone else here knows.

I’d say you need to move off just because VMware esxi 5.5 support ended a long time ago.. that’s scary.
