going to the systemshell and then emptying the contents of the audit.log files in /mroot/etc/log/mlog seems to work

Don't hold your breath on that still being possible in the future. There was one slide in the Intersight sessions where it was mentioned that with ONTAP 9.12.1 the audit log will be tamper proof (meaning protected by SnapLock I think).
