Reading the "Learn The Basics" section it seems like it's always necessary, but the examples on the AppShell page seem to omit it.

MantineProvider lets you manage the theme. If you don't need to change anything, you don't need to use it.
So, no, you don't need to wrap anything if you use the default theme.

on top of this, the docs usually try to show "the minimal amount of information possible". this also means the docs skip using required props in some components when explaining how to use other props
mantineprovider is optional, but it's useful for applying consistent styles application wide
