Clarification: I want to get a pickaxe or an axe with Magick score as high as possible. I do not intend to use it in melee (except for occasional block) and Oberon's bounty is enough to smash any node.

Am I getting it right that in order to max effects from spells like Immolation or Quake I just need to pile on mats with highest magick stat and completely ignore crit damage, at least on that tool?

Magick in itself can not crit, as it has crazy stats on its own.
However, certain spells will act like a crit, or even show gold numbers (if you have damage numbers on) simply due to how the numbers are calculated.

So for that number to be beneficial, you'd want to only pour stats into magick itself, and possibly stamina, as casting will rely on that as well. Though not much of a huge bit, just extra nudge in case you need to cast spells back to back.

Each spell has a scale in which your overall magick number (meaning clothing, charms, infusions, and the weapon in hand) will benefit.

Some spells, it's duration, or size, or potency

Stamina is also useful to pour into for magick users due to the Fabled Charm of Arcane Overcharge.

Aforementioned “pseudo crit” is a result of spells hitting enemies that have been toppled over and getting a 50% damage bonus from that
