I am trying to play co op with my bf. he is in another country. we are going to rent a server through GPortal. I just wanted to know if there should be any issues because of this? and also is there a certain point in the story where you are able to join a server?

west mesa
#

You can join into coop from the very start - no restrictions

#

As far as other issues, renting from gportal across countries, the only issue that might crop up is ping

thank you for your quick response!!! We have tried do hamachi but for some reason it still is not working and we are getting the dobbin error/cannot connect. which is why we are thinking about Gportal. but any suggestions on why it may not be working?

#

im sorry if this is a repetative question. im not the most technologically inclined person.

I would check firewall settings (there's another thread with some helpful tips I'll link). You also might try a different network mesh like radmin, zerotier, or scaletail. Some people have reported issues with hamachi, though I'm unsure if that's hamachi or firewall related

Hi! The game looks so cool and is very diverse so my sis and I decided to play together, but people keep saying we can't play together on Epic... only on Steam. Unless we rent a server or something?

Is there a way to just play together in Epic? Or is one coming out?

west mesa

No one on epic can use the steam friend invite system, but you can do a free dedicated server OR a listen server (where one person hosts and the other puts in the IP of the host) without any issues, provided you do a smidge of setup first.

#

see the below bot post.

See: https://playnightingale.com/news/play-with-friends
For multiplayer, you can use the host/join mechanics where one person is the host and everyone connects to that host. The host will need to open ports in their router and set up port forwarding. How to do this is highly dependent on your individual router model and ISP, and is not something that we can walk you through very easily - but check your router configuration page for options like 'NAT/Gaming' 'Port Forwarding' or 'External Connections'. The host's public IP will be required by everyone connecting.
You can find your public IP by visiting a site such as whatismyip.com
If everyone connecting to you is within your home network (that is, living in the same house as you), you can use your private IP instead, no port forwarding required - like LAN parties of old. See https://discord.com/channels/854679517997695016/1423434949272408255 for more information on host/join mode.

You can also download the dedicated server architecture from steam for free (even if you bought the game on epic) and set that up. Everyone will then join the IP of that sever - you'll also need the public IP & port forwarding setup for that. Setup FAQs can be found: https://discord.com/channels/854679517997695016/1395472159568040017

Alternatively, you can rent a server from GPortal. No setup required on your end, just use the IP and port that GPortal gives you. This is the only option that costs money.
-# Thanks Koriania for putting this together!

of note: if you opt to run a dedicated server, you can only download the framework from steam - but you don't even need a steam account to do so (and you certainly don't need to own the game on steam)

So a listen server for me and my sis in the same house is better than the dedicated server thing? And it saves the game on its own for us? And is free?

#

Thank you for taking all this time to help

west mesa
#

a listen server means that player A is the host that player B will join to and the game isn't available unless player A is currently playing.
If you're in the same house, you wont' need to do port forwarding - just use your lan assigned IPv4 (generally it starts with a 192. but not always).

#

that listen server requires zero additional software - just make sure to allow the program to connect through your firewall (on windows, there should be a popup, but it might get hidden)

#

a dedicated server requres additional (but still very free) software to be downloaded and then the game is available any time that server is on (most people leave it running indefinitely, as that's the point).

#

personally, on the same LAN, I'd go for the listen option, especially while mod support is light and/or non-existent. Its the easier technical option.

#

Thank you so much, we are going to try it tonight ^^

#

We found the ipv4 address ty πŸ™‚ does she need to do the tutorial before hosting? She created her character already

west mesa
#

as long as you are -not- on nightingale 0.3.2, you can play together from the very very first moments of the game.

rough bronze
#

Awesome ty, so does the ipv4 go in the port section? And then she creates a password?

west mesa
#

the host doesn't put in an IP at all.

#

she should fill out 7777 for the port, and a password if she wants one.

rough bronze
#

Ohhh kk so leave the port blank

#

Oh 7777

west mesa
#

then the person JOINING will have three slots to fill out. put in the host's IP, and then the same port and password that the host used.

rough bronze
#

So we don't need a password?

west mesa
#

you don't have to use one if you don't want.

rough bronze
#

Thank you!!! Sis and I are so happy bc we like never agree on games :)))

#

Hope you have a Happy Halloween πŸŽƒπŸ‘»

west mesa
#

you too! Enjoy the (what I think is an utterly fantastic!) game

rough bronze
#

So sis had to leave and came back and she pressed host a game again and it looks the same as last time, does she enter the same stuff (7777 and the password)

#

Or is that creating a new one if she does?

west mesa
#

enter the same stuff.

#

it'll only be different if she loads a different character

rough bronze
#

Ohh kk and she thinks she might have missed the tutorial since she closed out of the game after the intro cutscene... Do you know if that is a thing that happens?

west mesa
#

there's not really a tutorial like that. You start in a dark cave and you have to escape it and then puck gives you some quests. Anything she missed can be found in the quest log.

#

otherwise, the tutorial is in the Abeyance realm, finding all the treasured items. There are things near those items that you can mess with to learn how those items work.

Ohhh kk tysm πŸ™‚
